If I am really hungry and craving a sub at school, I am going to one place and one place only. That place is Our Hero. The white building located across from the cemetery on Plum Street in Springfield, Ohio, has a variety of different foods ranging from sandwiches, hot dogs, chili, onion rings, to fried mushrooms. She said, “We have all sorts of artery cloggers.” But if Our Hero is known for one thing, it surely is their sandwiches.

Lisa Rolland has been involved in the food industry since she was 15 years old. She is currently 40 years old, married with two daughters, and is the manager of the Our Hero on Plum Street. Her husband’s father owns the Our Hero franchise, which is a locally owned business with three restaurants here in Springfield.

Lisa grew up in Ohio and attended Urbana University in hopes of becoming a teacher focusing on elementary education. At this point in her life, she had no intention of running a business at some point in her life. This quickly changed though. She became server at a restaurant called Scooters, where she was a server. Then, in 2005, she was an unemployed single parent when she first got involved with Our Hero through her future husband. She started out working as a cashier but shortly became the manager of the restaurant.

She worked at Our Hero until 2008 when she moved to Virginia where she and her husband opened up Gionettis sandwich shop in downtown Roanoke. Very similar to Our Hero, she worked there for about a year but then came back to Springfield, due to her husband having health issues.

Back at Our Hero, Lisa has a great relationship with the Wittenberg students. She stated, “I absolutely love Witt Students. You guys are a wonderful class of a person.” She also stated that Wittenberg definitely gives them a good boost in terms of business.
Since Lisa first began working, she has not really encountered too many problems within the business. There has been no dining and dashing due to the fact that you have to pay before you eat. Sometimes in the summer though, people use the bathroom to either bathe or take a few hits of their drug of choice or the skateboarders use their parking lot. “This only happens on occasion though”, she stated.

When I asked her what her favorite sandwich was, she said that she makes her own chicken Philly combining chicken, cheddar, bacon and ranch. The weirdest request for a sandwich she ever has gotten was someone who asked for a sandwich with every single type of meat they had. She replied that she was definitely going to have charge extra for that one.

It doesn’t seem like Lisa will be leaving Our Hero anytime soon, but when she does she will probably pass on the business to her kids. She said that she definitely wants it to stay in the family. When she does retire and pass the business on, she could always go back and teach with her degree, something she said she wouldn’t mind doing.

I asked Lisa if she ever gets sick of sandwiches and she said, “Sure I do. I’m sure you get sick of going to class.” She said she just goes to bed, wakes up with a better attitude the next day. “I guess it’s just what I love to do”, she said.

Frolf: A True Experience

If you are a prospective student touring Wittenberg’s beautiful campus, you may notice these 4- foot high chained holes scattered throughout the campus. That seems to be a typical occurrence for newcomers looking at Wittenberg for the first time. Prospective student at the time, Merrick Austin, remembers thinking, “What the heck are these things?” A year later, a freshman at Witt, he was more than familiar with what these objects were.

Frisbee disk golf, or “frolf” as many of Wittenberg college students call it, is a game where you aim to throw a disk into a chained hole. There are a variety of pars, from three to five, just like in real golf. There also are a variety of types of disks ranging from drivers to putters. Some people who just play occasionally for fun just have one disk while others have an entire case of Frisbees.

Disk golf first originated in the late 1960’s. The first Frisbee golf courses were “object courses” where people could use anything from trees, light poles, garbage cans, to fire hydrants as targets. Since then though, the sport has really developed and now has legitimate chain catching devices and a variety of equipment.

Wittenberg’s Frisbee golf course attracts people left and right. On weekends, if the weather is nice, the course is usually filled with students frolfing. “There’s nothing better in college than a nice sunny day, no homework, and playing frolf with all your homeboys”, said junior Robbie Farquhar.

People sometimes even have to wait to tee off at certain times. Frolf at Wittenberg has been become so widely recognized that sometimes people outside of Wittenberg’s community come to Springfield just to play on Wittenberg’s course!

Wittenberg sophomore, Benny White, got in hole in one earlier this year and described it as “one of the best moments in his life”
Although Frisbee golf may look easy, don’t let it fool you. Frisbee golf takes a good amount of skill and requires much practice to become good. It is nothing like tossing a regular Frisbee. One has a variety of factors to take into account when playing such as how to throw the Frisbee, what Frisbee to use depending on how far away from the hole you are, and other natural factors such as adapting to wind conditions and avoiding various trees.

Many students at Wittenberg have never even heard of the game until they came to school here at Wittenberg. Now, students play rounds of nine holes day in and day out. “It’s an enjoyable game to play with friends that you can do for hours,” said junior, Alec Nicolovski. If the sun is out and the wind is calm, why not play some frolf.

Back on Top?

On Monday morning, the wind was blowing, the sun was shining, and the grass was flawlessly cut. It was a perfect day at the Augusta National Golf Club. It was a perfect day to welcome champion golfers from around the world to the 2010 Masters Tournament. And better yet, it was a perfect day for Tiger Woods to get back on par.

The four-time Masters champion became famous for one thing and one thing only; playing golf. People have been watching Tiger Woods on TV for years now because he is one, if not the best, golfer in the world. A graduate of Stanford University, the man has become one of the most recognized sports figures in the world as he has won 14 major golf tournaments and 71 PGA Tour Events. Recently though, the champion golfer has had much more to worry about in his life other than golf.

Unless you have been living under a shell for the last few months, you probably have heard about all of the chaos in Tiger’s life. The man was found cheating on his wife on a number of occasions. In addition to that Woods was in a car accident a day after the first affair was made public. Because of the whole sex scandal ordeal, Woods has lost family, friends, sponsors, and people in general look at his differently now. The media has gotten their hands on just about everything and for lack of a better word, have attacked him day in and day out. Sure the man made some poor choices and he is going to have to live and deal with them but those decisions he made are now in the past

Today, April 8th, 2010, Tiger Woods teed off at 1:42 p.m. A large crowd of hundreds of people awaited as the man confidently walked onto the first tee in his striped green shirt. Throughout the day, Tiger was shown talking to people, smiling, and really enjoying himself. And better yet, he finished the day with a career best first day at the Masters as he shot a 68, 4 under par.

Tiger showed everyone today that he can move on and put the past in the past. People make mistakes in life all the time. Sure, this was a huge and costly mistake, not to mention life-changing for Tiger and his family but what happened happened. Tiger has been through sex addiction therapy, has talked to many people, dealt with the media constantly and their ridiculous questioning, and now he is back. And after not playing in a tournament for 144 days, to shoot a 68 and be tied for 7th place after the first day at the biggest tournament in golf history; well, I think it is safe to say he is back on track. And for everyone who has made judgments one way or another about Tiger, that’s fine. But people have grown to know Tiger Woods for who he is as a golfer, not anything in his personal life that had to be exposed to the public because of the fact that he is famous. And after the first day in August, it seems like he’s back on top.

Panera Experience

Panera Bread may have an expensive price on their food, but they sure do make eating there a memorable experience. The restaurant on Bechtle Avenue in Springfield, Ohio provides a place where you can get delicious food quickly, in a clean and comfortable atmosphere, with utmost friendliness and service.

Although Panera isn’t really a full service dine-in type restaurant, as soon as I sat down with my friends, an employee cleaned the table off. Also, throughout the meal, workers made sure everything was okay including the manager of the restaurant asking how everything was.

The restaurant is very organized with the seating area and ordering area. There are a variety of places to sit, with different types of tables and chairs that provide room for a variety of crowds. With that, there order and pick-up system seems to be well designed as the pick-up area is far away from the order area to eliminate combustion.

Everyone seemed to respect the environment as I saw people put their trays away. Everything was clean and neat due to the mutual respect amongst customers and workers.

There is good lighting with multiple colored walls and calm tranquil colors that creates a homey feeling for the customers. The classical music and fireplace added to that homey feeling and really made me feel in a comfortable environment.

All of this talk about the environment. What about the food. Well, my Italian sandwich was nothing short of unbelievable. The perfect amount of meat and condiments was on it and I truly enjoyed every single bite of it. After I was done eating, I thought about how great an experience eating at Panera was from start to finish.

With a very wide target audience including males and females and anyone from the high school age to much older, Panera really has it down to a science.

Secret Sins

From beer bonging 151 rum to having sex in wild places, students at Wittenberg University are definitely in their own little bubble, for good or for worse. What may seem like close to perfection or goodness on the outside really is quite the opposite.

A recent non-scientific poll, entitled Secret Sins, was recently distributed to 118 male and female students at Wittenberg ranging in class. The survey was designed to find out whether students take part in certain actions that they typically wouldn’t admit. Some questions that were asked included things like whether they have shoplifted, gone to class under the influence, or taken part in a threesome.

In regards to the poll, one major theme that came about in regards to the craziest thing people have done included sex in some way or another. Whether it was breaking their friends mom’s bed from having sex too hard or having sex on a golf course, there were a variety of both extreme and hilarious stories. One male student stated, “I had sex in a pool with a girl while 30 people were watching us.” Another male student said that they, “made love in the club at Mcmurray’s” Regarding some statistics in the sexual context, 61 percent of students have skinny dipped, 55 percent have streaked and 68 percent have sexted, sent sexual material through text messaging.

Many of these sex stories are directly related to using and abusing drugs and alcohol. 42 percent have done adderall without having a prescription for it and 62 percent of students have driven under the influence. Many of these students have shoplifted in order to get things like beer and champagne. Also, one student had an “LSD induced conversation with a bunny” while someone else “went streaking through two sororities.” For some reason, I doubt that was sober.

Most college students go to school for an education. Ironically though, 67 percent of the students have came to class under the influence. Also, 81 percent of the students have cheated in school! Maybe, they just need to cheat because their under the influence in class. Who knows!

College students have four years. Why not make the best of those four years, right?

Adderrall Abuse Rough Draft

Various medications around the world can be effective in many ways to treat a variety of illness and conditions, but if misused some can be addictive and dangerous. College students around the country abuse different medications and drugs, one such one being adderall. Going along with that, many of these students who may be abusing adderall may not even have a prescription for it.

Aderrall is a prescription medication that is used for ADHD, attention deficit disorder. ADHD involves an inability to pay attention, hyperactivity, and impulse actions, and the medication adderral is used to help people focus and concentrate in order to deal with this condition.

Access to prescription drugs, especially adderall, now-a-days is really not very hard. There are a number of people who have prescriptions for it who can easily give to other people who don’t have a prescription.

There is a general consensus that stimulants like Adderall increase performance in people who do and do not have ADHD. So, if a better GPA can be obtained by college students with less effort being put forth, the idea that college students are going to obtain Adderall any way they can is brought forth. There are many students that actually go in to see a doctor and exaggerate the symptoms of ADHD so that they can acquire the medication.

This idea leads to the question that everyone seems to think of. Is it morally right to use adderall without a prescription? Should people take any means that they can in life to get by and succeed, all other thoughts and consequences aside?

Junior Kevin Wright at Wittenberg University has used aderrall on a variety of occasions. The majority of these occasions though have been related to schoolwork. Wright stated, “I leave a lot of my work to do at the last minute. It is a bad habit that I have gotten accustom to. When I need to get a lot done in a short amount of time, I typically turn to adderall. It has really helped me get stuff done, that I otherwise wouldn’t have. Lucky for me, one of my good friends here has a prescription for it because he has ADHD so I have easy access to it whenever I need it.”

Another student at the University of Connecticut described his usage of adderall. Freshman, James Winter used it for finals last semester. This is the only time he ever used it. He stated, “It made me feel focused on my work. I really believe that it helps and works. I still failed half of my finals but that is because my classes are nearly impossible, not because the adderall didn’t help.”

Wright and Winter are examples of college students who do not have a prescription for adderrall but have used it for performance enhancing purposes in school in order to try and get work done at the last minute and achieve better grades in school.

The consequences of adderall abuse can be very dangerous. Taking high doses of any stimulant can result in things like an irregular heartbeat, extremely high body temperatures, and even the potential of cardiovascular failure, or seizures. Many students who take adderall, especially the ones without a prescription, are unaware of these effects.

Junior Alex Gonzalez from Columbus, Ohio, actually has attention deficit disorder and takes a form of adderall called concerta every day. Gonzalez stated, “ I think it is a rising problem that many college students take it who aren’t prescribed to take it and that many people don’t know enough about the drug to really be using it. There is a lot of danger and side effects that could possibly come about from taking it too much or taking it without being prescribed to.”

Taking adderall without a prescription for it and abusing it seems like a problem that is only getting worse and is a matter that really needs to be considered, understood, and addressed.

Carl Loney Rough Draft

Wittenberg’s Chief of Security, Carl Loney, was born to do what he does. Loney spent 30 years within the Sheriff’s Department, starting when he was just 18 years old. He made it all the way up the ranks to Senior Operations Commander. Now Loney serves Wittenberg and the outside Springfield community.

Loney takes pride in being able to maintain control and security over Wittenberg’s campus while also maintaining a good relationship with the students. In regards to the students at Wittenberg, Loney stated, we want you to have a good experience here.”

So, while Loney has to be serious and strict in many situations in and around campus, he wants to make sure the students and he have a good relationship and tries to be really down to earth with them. Although he won’t condone it, the chief of security stated, “Streaking in the Hollow has been going on since Day One. It ain’t like robbing a bank in my book.”

Although we students at Wittenberg may call Loney the “email man”, he and his force of 13 others have full police authority. They keep control of the campus, look and report crime, take in calls, and overall try to provide and maintain a safe community here. They have a patrollable area outside of just Wittenberg’s campus going all the way out to Limestone and down to the south side of Buck Creek.

A crime report is posted online for anyone to view which shows the different crimes and violations that have occurred in Springfield on a yearly basis showing any changes from year to year. One noticeable statistic is the major decrease in liquor violations since the year 2006. Along with this crime report, Loney has instated an emergency text message notification system which updates students and faculty immediately in regards to crime, weather, and other substantial emergencies that people need to be aware of.

From alcohol infractions to sexual assault, Loney has definitely seen it all during his years here at Wittenberg. The weirdest case Loney ever came across was five years ago in Myers hall when a male student was urinating in the bathroom and a snake came out from the wall and looked him “eye to eye”. “That one was for the books”, Loney stated.

When asked if Loney liked his job, he stated, “I wouldn’t trade it, I love it.”
